If you have been diagnosed with cancer or are taking medication that may help you on your cancer treatment plan, you may have a small but significant increase in the risk of severe adverse reactions if you are prescribed Nexium (esomeprazole) as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Nexium is the brand name for esomeprazole magnesium. The drug is also sold under the brand name Prilosec. In general, people who are prescribed Nexium should take it 2 to 3 hours before the cancer treatment.
Nexium is used in combination with other cancer treatment to treat certain types of cancer. It is also used in the management of certain types of breast, endometrial, uterine, lung, pancreatic, and other types of cancers. In addition to cancer treatments, Nexium can also be used to control high blood pressure. It is also used as a preventative medicine for the symptoms of angina pectoris (chest pain).
People who have had an ulcer in their stomach, liver, or kidney, or who have a peptic ulcer, perforation, or bleeding in their stomach, intestine, or stomach area, or bleeding in their stomach area are at risk of getting Nexium overdose. If you have a blood test to check your Nexium levels, you can ask your doctor to prescribe an antidote to prevent your Nexium overdose.

Always take this medicine exactly as described in the Consumer Medicine Information leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist have told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The recommended dose is one tablet a day. - Do not take more than this recommended dose of one tablet (20 mg) a day, even if you don't feel an improvement immediately. - You may need to take Nexium 24HR for a few days before experiencing the full effect. - Nexium 24HR should be taken for at least 7 days and up to 14 days. - Tell your pharmacist or doctor if you do not feel better while taking Nexium 24HR. If symptoms persist or recur within 2 weeks of completing the course, consult your doctor. Further examination may be required.

You should not experience any new symptoms until you are treating your condition. Once you have finished taking Nexium 24HR you should contact your doctor if you notice any symptoms of acid regurgitation or other problems that need treatment. Symptoms of heartburn will usually alleviate the following symptoms after taking Nexium 24HR: diarrhoea, abdominal and throat pain, persistent wheezing, trouble swallowing or breathing, redness of the mouth or throat, itching or hives, redness of the skin, swelling of the hands, feet, or hands, unusual breathing.Nexium 24HR helps to treat severe heartburn, which occurs when acid moves into and out of your heartburn pain.
